Mailchimp is an email marketing tool. We use them at Task.fm to send our email newsletters and I also use them on a number of other projects.
There seems to be a bit of a debate between whether to choose Aweber or Mailchimp. In my mind, there really is no debate at all. Here is the big difference for me: Aweber is used primarily by so called “internet marketers”. The ones who create those crappy info products the promote get rich quick schemes. Aweber has always and always will be their product of choice.
Now for a startup, I don’t want to associate my brand with that product. Mailchimp has a very strict sending policy – I’ve seen the rants of some so called “internet marketers” for getting banned from Mailchimp, and thats a good thing. If you’re not aware, email is all about reputation. If you’re sending mail from the same IP address as a dodgy internet marketer, it can affect whether your mail ends up in the spam folder or not. So thats why I put my trust in Mailchimp.
But enough of the Aweber hating – the most important quality of Mailchimp is the innovation. They are always pushing the limits creating new concepts and trying out new ideas. For example, they created an awesome design genius which visits your site, downloads your logo, finds a matching colour scheme and creates a beautiful looking email template. It worked so well, that I didn’t even bother designing an email design for Task.fm – it did a great job on its own.
Other innovations – A/B testing, Social PRO (see what your subscribers look like and what their Twitter/ facebook profiles are. This is a killer feature), a powerful API (which we use at Task.fm), subject line suggester….The list goes on. Sure others are copying and many of these features will come to other products. But would you rather be with the innovators or the clones?
If you want the latest features, best deliverability, and a solid UI, then there really is no other choice. And yes, you can try it free. In fact most bloggers I know, don’t pay for Mailchimp at all as they are under the paid subscriber limit.
