The Rackspace Cloud is the hosting provider I use to power a number of web apps. Write.fm and my upcoming Poke.fm project are both hosted on Rackspace Cloud Servers. I also use the Rackspace Cloud Files CDN to deliver images across numerous sites as well as running the shot.fm file hosting service.
So why choose the Rackspace Cloud?
Price was a big deciding factor for me. Although Amazon has since introduced a smaller instance size, for a long time, they only had large instances on their EC2 platform. With Rackspace, I was able to get started for just $11 a month – which gave me a small 256mb server that was enough to run as a development platform.
CNAMES is an Issue
My only gripe is that there is no support for CNAME’s on Rackspace Cloud Files. Its rather ridiculous that this isn’t supported. For those who rely on a CDN, you’ll know how important this is.
The Final Verdict
Overall, the Rackspace cloud is both a reliable and well priced platform for running web apps on. Write.fm has amazing uptime, and thats down to Rackspace.
